Emily Saltz

Emily Saltz is the Founder and Principal Researcher of Saltern Studio, a research and design consultancy shaping technology to support the public interest. Previously, Emily was a Senior User Experience Researcher at Jigsaw (Google), where she drove foundational research for the Sensemaker toolkit for analyzing large-scale online conversations. At the New York Times R&D Lab, she led research on NLP-based Q&A systems and blockchain-based provenance prototypes. As a former Research Fellow at the Partnership on AI, she published work on manipulated media disclosure and responsible AI art practices. Emily’s work has been published and presented at leading AI ethics and social science venues including CHI, AIES, EPIC, and the Psychology of Technology Institute. She has served as part-time faculty in the Design & Technology MFA at Parsons and holds a Master’s in Human-Computer Interaction from Carnegie Mellon University. In 2025, she completed a documentary residency at the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies, where she directed The 19% (forthcoming 2026), a short film exploring civic traditions in Maine. She is based in Brooklyn, New York.
