Gürkan Özturan

Gürkan Özturan is the Media Freedom Monitoring Officer for Media Freedom Rapid Response at the European Centre for Press and Media Freedom. He holds two M.A. degrees, one in European Politics from Le Centre International de Formation Européenne and another in European Union Studies from Istanbul Bilgi University. Özturan has a background in journalism, having served as the Executive Manager of dokuz8NEWS, and as editor of Digital Age magazine, where he focused on digital culture and the impact of new technologies on society and politics. He is also the author of a book on the rise of the radical right in the Balkans. Özturan has been the rapporteur for Turkey in Freedom House’s Freedom on the Net report since 2019, and for the Global Information Society Watch by the Association for Progressive Communication since 2017. He has served as a board member for several NGOs and social movements, including the Turkey-European Foundation, Media Research Association, D84 Association/daktilo1984, and Red Ribbon Istanbul.
