Maria Laura Ruiu

Maria Laura Ruiu (PhD) is Associate Professor of Media and Communication at the American University of Sharjah, UAE. Her research examines digital and environmental inequalities, social capital, media and communication, and the societal consequences of artificial intelligence. Her recent work explores digital-environmental poverty and the ways AI systems can reproduce and reorganize existing inequalities. She is co-author, with Massimo Ragnedda, of The Inequality Regime of AI: Power, Allocation, and the Struggle for Justice (Routledge, 2026).
