Sam Gregory

Dr. Sam Gregory is an authority on generative AI, provenance, and emerging technology, and an expert on smartphone witnessing, and human rights and civic journalism using video and technology. In 2018, four years before ChatGPT, he launched "Prepare, Don't Panic," the first global civil society initiative on deepfakes. Former Executive Director of WITNESS, winner of the inaugural Peabody Global Impact Award for “media or organizations that have profoundly changed the world for the better,” and a TED speaker and 2025 Gruber Distinguished Lecturer at Yale, Sam has spent his career defending our ability to know what's real. He co-chaired the Threats and Harms Taskforce within the C2PA, the content-credentials standard now used by newsrooms, Google, OpenAI, Anthropic, and TikTok, and initiated the first global Deepfake Rapid Response Force at WITNESS. He has testified on AI before both houses of the US Congress. A board member of the Scott Trust, which owns The Guardian, he is currently a Visiting Scholar at American University.
