Samuel Woolley

Dr. Samuel Woolley is the William S. Dietrich II Endowed Chair In Disinformation Studies and an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication at the University of Pittsburgh. His most recent book is Manufacturing Consensus: Understanding Propaganda in the Age of Automation and Anonymity, an award-winning exploration of the people behind modern propaganda campaigns. Woolley is also the author of The Reality Game: How the Next Wave of Technology Will Break the Truth, a future-oriented primer discussing the ways digital disinformation and propaganda are already being spread using artificial intelligence, virtual reality and other novel technologies. He is the co-author, with Nick Monaco, of Bots, and co-editor, with Dr. Philip N. Howard, of Computational Propaganda. Prior to joining the faculty at Pitt, Woolley was the founder and program director of the Propaganda Research Lab and a Knight Foundation faculty fellow at the Center for Media Engagement (CME) at the University of Texas at Austin. His PhD is from the University of Washington-Seattle.
