Republication policy
Unless otherwise noted, the text of our articles is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-NoDerivatives 4.0 International (CC BY-ND 4.0) license, and you may republish it online or in print for free.
This license covers article text only. It does not cover photographs, illustrations, charts, interactive graphics, audio, video, or any third-party material contained in an article (see below).
Two conditions of the license are mandatory: attribution and no derivatives. The items under "Additional requests" are things we ask of you but are not conditions of the license.
License conditions (required)
Attribution. Credit both Tech Policy Press and every listed author and include a link to the original URL (for print, see "Special cases"). Retain any copyright, license, or disclaimer notice we provide, and indicate if you have made any changes. Crediting the publication without naming the authors, or naming the authors without crediting the publication, does not satisfy this condition.
No derivatives. You may reproduce the article in whole or in part, but you may not publicly share an adapted or altered version. You may make the non-substantive changes needed to publish, adjusting references to time or location, conforming to your house editorial style, and converting the format or medium (for example, print layout or web formatting), and you must preserve all story hyperlinks. Substantive edits, rewrites, abridgments, translations, and other adaptations require permission from Tech Policy Press and the author(s) before publication. Images, graphics, and third-party material are not licensed. Do not republish photographs, illustrations, charts, or interactive graphics included with the article without specific permission; some are licensed from commercial providers and cannot be republished without permission or payment. You are welcome to omit them or substitute your own. Third-party material quoted or embedded in an article is likewise not covered by this license. Contact contributions@techpolicy.press if you have questions about specific images.
Additional requests (not license conditions)
In the byline, we prefer “Author Name, Publication.” At the top of the text of your story, please include a line that reads: “This story was originally published by Tech Policy Press” and include a link to the original URL of the story.
Do not state or imply that subscriptions or donations to your organization support Tech Policy Press’s work.
Do not represent yourself as the authorized owner of our material to any third parties.
Do not sell, syndicate, sublicense, or relicense our content to third parties. Every reader already receives the CC BY-ND license directly from Tech Policy Press, so you cannot grant anyone rights in our work. For commercial licensing — including licensing for AI training — contact contributions@techpolicy.press.
Please select individual articles to republish rather than systematically republishing all of our articles.
Do not use our work to populate a website designed to improve rankings on search engines or solely to gain revenue from network-based advertisements.
If you share republished stories on social media, we’d appreciate being tagged in your posts. We have official accounts for Tech Policy Press on LinkedIn, Bluesky, and Instagram.
Special cases
Extracts: You can run the first few lines or paragraphs of the article and then say: “Read the full article on Tech Policy Press” with a link back to the article.
Quotes: You can quote articles provided you include a link back to the original article URL.
Translations: a translation is an adaptation and is not permitted under this license; it requires permission from Tech Policy Press and the author(s). Contact contributions@techpolicy.press for assistance.
Signed consent/copyright release forms are not required, provided you are following these terms of the license.
Print: articles can be published in print under these same rules, with the exception that you do not need to include the link to the original story. We would appreciate it if you would send an image of the republished article to contributions@techpolicy.press so that we can share it with the author.
Podcast and video: producing an audio or video version of an article is an adaptation and is not covered by this license; it requires prior permission. You may quote from an article in a podcast or video provided you attribute Tech Policy Press and the author(s) and link back to the original.
AI, text and data mining, and automated collection: we welcome ordinary search-engine crawling, indexing, archiving, and academic or public-interest research. We do not grant rights to use our articles, individually or collected as a corpus, for commercial AI training, fine-tuning, embeddings, or retrieval systems. Those uses are reserved and require a separate license; contact contributions@techpolicy.press. We publish machine-readable signals (including robots.txt directives and a text-and-data-mining reservation) that reflect these terms.
All rights not expressly granted by the CC BY-ND license are reserved. Republishing in a way that does not comply with these terms is not licensed and may infringe the copyrights of Tech Policy Press and its authors.
